The writing quality and passing is on par with the hobbit。 An equally great choice to read to a child。

This is by far one of the most original fantasy books with one of the most vividly realized worlds I've read, and the themes explored--those of kindness, and your biggest enemy being yourself--were great a palate cleanser from current world events。 There is also the subversive-ness of the main character being a brown person and his best friend being black that I really enjoyed。 This was also one of many things I enjoyed about Le Guin's 'Left Hand of Darkness。' But having read 'Left Hand of Darkn This is by far one of the most original fantasy books with one of the most vividly realized worlds I've read, and the themes explored--those of kindness, and your biggest enemy being yourself--were great a palate cleanser from current world events。 There is also the subversive-ness of the main character being a brown person and his best friend being black that I really enjoyed。 This was also one of many things I enjoyed about Le Guin's 'Left Hand of Darkness。' But having read 'Left Hand of Darkness,' the similarly episodic nature of the narrative in "A Wizard of Earthsea" didn't work for me。 The peril of the shadow didn't feel as urgent as, say, running out food was in Left Hand of Darkness, and so there were times while reading I zoned out。 I also found that I cared more for the characters Ged met along the way than I did for Ged himself。 The book starts by telling us he'll become the greatest mage of all time, so I had a hard time getting invested in how his journey would unfold。 。。。more

The "villain" is in fact most unique, and straight away implies that this is not normal fantasy YA。Apart from that, everything is meh。 I enjoyed the very beginning and the very end。 Everything between is just。。。dry with top tier meditations about fear and how should we face it rather than running from it。 I think the author intended this part to be subtle, the part about the "villain" is yourself and your fears。 Its not subtle at all。 Nonetheless, the direction in which the author decided to go The "villain" is in fact most unique, and straight away implies that this is not normal fantasy YA。Apart from that, everything is meh。 I enjoyed the very beginning and the very end。 Everything between is just。。。dry with top tier meditations about fear and how should we face it rather than running from it。 I think the author intended this part to be subtle, the part about the "villain" is yourself and your fears。 Its not subtle at all。 Nonetheless, the direction in which the author decided to go with the big bad is ambitious and admirable, and probably risky with the target audience。 This is probably the first time my rating matched with the description of the rating。 "It was ok" 。。。more

I read and re-read A Wizard of Earthsea over the years, and upon every reading, it more and more confirms itself as my favorite fantasy novel。 It's astounding that the book was written in the sixties, amongst the image of wizards such as Merlin and Gandalf, and the epic fantasy backdrop of the Lord of the Rings series。 What LeGuin provides, and what keeps the book as affecting as it is, is that the "enemy" is not some evil force against which the protagonist must struggle, but a specter of his o I read and re-read A Wizard of Earthsea over the years, and upon every reading, it more and more confirms itself as my favorite fantasy novel。 It's astounding that the book was written in the sixties, amongst the image of wizards such as Merlin and Gandalf, and the epic fantasy backdrop of the Lord of the Rings series。 What LeGuin provides, and what keeps the book as affecting as it is, is that the "enemy" is not some evil force against which the protagonist must struggle, but a specter of his own pride。 This gives the novel meaning that resonates with young adult readers and remains relevant to adults。 。。。more

genuinely upset that i ran into harry potter instead of this book as a kid because my god was this so much more interesting。 i'll be honest ursula le guin's style in this is a bit hard for me to stay focused on (the same way i am with the lord of the rings and most older fantasy books) but it is still incredibly gorgeous in that old timey recounted-by-the-fire way。 the fact that there is no external adversary is brilliant because the stakes manage to feel higher throughout anyways, and that endi genuinely upset that i ran into harry potter instead of this book as a kid because my god was this so much more interesting。 i'll be honest ursula le guin's style in this is a bit hard for me to stay focused on (the same way i am with the lord of the rings and most older fantasy books) but it is still incredibly gorgeous in that old timey recounted-by-the-fire way。 the fact that there is no external adversary is brilliant because the stakes manage to feel higher throughout anyways, and that ending was just chefs kiss。 explaining this book in plain terms might make it sound simple and not super exciting but the way le guin executes it makes it feel like high art。 i wish earthsea had any good fuckin adaptations lmao。 this was absolutely the fantasy story for kids who'd grow up to like broody dark stuff rather than good vs evil tales。 i say kids but honestly i thoroughly enjoyed this at 21 lol, fantasy is not just for children。 if i summed this book up in someone elses quote, it would be miyazaki: "I am concerned, because for me the deep forest is connected in some way to the darkness deep in my heart。 I feel that if it is erased, then darkness inside my heart would also disappear, and my existence would grow shallow。" 。。。more

I have never read any of Ursula Le Guin's books and she is held in high esteem by writers I like and I have read quotes of hers (and one or two articles and short stories) that I liked very much, so when this flew by in the Kindle mail that comes each day I bought it。 But while it was ok and I didn't give up on it or find it hard work to read, neither did I get that much from it。 Perhaps because the target audience is young adult, the message was a bit too spelt out (about power and wisdom and e I have never read any of Ursula Le Guin's books and she is held in high esteem by writers I like and I have read quotes of hers (and one or two articles and short stories) that I liked very much, so when this flew by in the Kindle mail that comes each day I bought it。 But while it was ok and I didn't give up on it or find it hard work to read, neither did I get that much from it。 Perhaps because the target audience is young adult, the message was a bit too spelt out (about power and wisdom and experience)。 Left me unsure as to whether to read any more in this series, though I still think I should try one of her other books, but one aimed squarely at adults this time。 Very much a gathering wisdom by making all the classic teenage mistakes tale。  。。。more

Ged is his True name, but don’t wear it out。 The young sorceror’s commonly used name is Sparrowhawk, and he only shares his True name with those he trusts implicitly。 In Earthsea, knowledge of someone’s True name gives the knower power over the named。This children’s fantasy novel is an extreme coming of age story with elements of Harry Potter (sorceror school) and the Lord of the Rings (lots of sorcerors hold up staffs, staffs light up, etc)。 Ged is proud and a bit arrogant, which should come as Ged is his True name, but don’t wear it out。 The young sorceror’s commonly used name is Sparrowhawk, and he only shares his True name with those he trusts implicitly。 In Earthsea, knowledge of someone’s True name gives the knower power over the named。This children’s fantasy novel is an extreme coming of age story with elements of Harry Potter (sorceror school) and the Lord of the Rings (lots of sorcerors hold up staffs, staffs light up, etc)。 Ged is proud and a bit arrogant, which should come as no surprise since he’s accidentally discovered that his mentor considers him to be a future Archmage。 After he accepts a challenge thrown down by his rival, with disastrous results, Ged and those around him are in danger – a danger that only Ged can obliterate。The only way I knew this was a children’s novel was by googling it。 In hindsight though, there are a few chapters in the middle of the tale that could stand on their own as short stories; they almost read as fables。 Those chapters do have a “let me tell you a story, children” quality。Le Guin is known for challenging fantasy stereotypes, and there is some of that in this book; the skin colors of most of the characters are red-brown to brown-black – but there is a notable lack of female characters in this 1968 publication。 If I had read this as child in 1968, I would have seen nothing to contradict the message that women are meant to play a supporting role。 The one woman who challenges this assumption is perceived as evil。I listened to the audio version narrated by Rob Inglis。 Inglis also narrated the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and only thing that kept me from thinking I was in Middle Earth, with the the combination of wizards, staffs, and Inglis’ British accent, was the fact that much of this tale takes place at sea。Overall, I rate A Wizard of Earthsea at a healthy three stars; I liked the story well enough, but didn’t like the gender stereotypes, and I thought the narrator, while obviously talented, was not a good match。 。。。more
